Since moving away from the ocean, I've realized a need.
You can record the sound of crashing waves and ebbing surf, and you can take photos of miles of sand or tide-smoothed rocks, but you can't record the smell of salty air and misty afternoons.
Someone needs to invent a way to take that with you: to carry around a scent as more than just a memory.
The minute I hit the ground on the east coast this summer, I made my way to the Atlantic. There was no time for food or sleep or visits or even a shower. I picked up my rental car, opened the windows all the way, and headed straight for that smell.
This is Lawrencetown Beach, just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
It's known not for soft sand or calm water, but for its miles of beach rocks and waves that make it a surfing mecca for miles.
And just over here... another vantage point.
I walked a LOT of beach that day...
...and realized how much I'd been missing all that I couldn't take with me.
