Big Sur

Tell anyone you've got spare 'tourist time' in central California, and they will tell you to see Big Sur. Drive the Pacific Coast Highway?

 

You bet I did.

 

In fact, I spent four hours driving from Monterey to somewhere just south of Gorda, which is apparently pretty good time considering all "STOP THE CAR!" moments I had. Then it was another four hours back. The drive is mountainous and winding and reminded me of my beloved Cabot Trail, with a side order of west coast personality.

But don't take my word for it.
